2013 Sponsor Workshop

sponsors2013November saw another first in the organization of the 2015 U.S. Figure Skating Championships: a workshop for local sponsors over 14 months in advance of the event! NC 2015 currently has 17 excellent local sponsors (our sponsors are reflected at the end of this newsletter and on our website), and there was a strong turnout among the sponsor team for the event, which was held in the Atlantic Coast Conference Board Room at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex.

Sponsors revisited success factors from the 2011 U.S. Championships and then committed to raising the bar even higher for 2015. Attendees received progress reports on the organization of the U.S. Championships to date and NC 2015 staff laid out plans for 2014-15. Presentations were made by local sponsors BEM, Vela and Graphic Visual Solutions, all of which were sponsors in 2011 and have re-upped for 2015.

BEM focused on the attractive and easy-to-navigate website they have created for the event. The website can be accessed at Vela went over their current marketing designs and then unveiled a new advertising campaign to begin in 2014 with the theme "Simply Stunning." The final sponsor presentation was by Graphic who gave sponsors a run down on their extensive guest program at the 2011 U.S. Championships, with pointers on what worked the best for successful customer and prospect hospitality in and around the event.

"We are involved in a lot of sponsorships because we like to be heavily involved in the community," said Bryan Hall, president of Graphic. "The U.S. Figure Skating Championships were by far the best sponsorship we have ever done and it still resonates with our guests."

The workshop concluded with a brainstorming session on ideas for sponsor activation and potential cross promotions and a tour of the numerous major improvements at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex.

The Crazy Season

Just like the rest of the figure skating world, we are now in the crazy season when the activity level ramps up several times over as the sport heads toward the  2014 U.S. Championships in Boston and on to the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Your North Carolina 2015 Team is just as crazed as the rest of the figure skating universe right now.

Here is a brief list of recent and upcoming activities:

•    Sunday, Nov. 3:  For the first time our NC 2015 Team promoted the U.S. Championships at the Synchro Classic hosted by the Central Carolina Figure Skating Club. This event was very well attended and we will be back for more next fall!

•    Thursday, Nov. 14: The first-ever outdoor skating rink (and currently the only rink in town) opened in Durham, N.C. Get more details on the new Ice Factory Rink in the story that follows.

•    Monday, Nov. 18: Site visit by Kevin Leonardo, director, event production, U.S. Figure Skating

•    Wednesday, Nov. 20 and Saturday, Nov. 23: The first date involved media features on the upcoming opening of the bigger and better-than-ever downtown Greensboro ice rink. The  WFMY News 2 Winterfest Rink had its Grand Opening on the 23rd, featuring skaters from the Summit Figure Skating Club in Greensboro and ticket giveaways for the 2015 U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

winter2013•    Friday-Sunday, Nov. 22-24: NC 2015 representatives established a 2015 U.S. Championships presence at Eastern Sectionals in Ashburn, Va.

Thanks so very much to our key volunteers, staff and ambassadors, including Paul Brown, Nicole Stalker, Faryn Roy and Paul & Judith Walmsley for taking the 2015 U.S. Championships message to the masses!

North Carolina's Newest Outdoor Rink

dec2013 Thanks to the combined efforts of your NC 2015 staff, two of our current sponsors, Ice Rink Events and Graphic Visual Solutions, and one of our 2011 AT&T U.S. Figure Skating Championships sponsors, Capitol Broadcasting Company, North Carolina has added another outstanding seasonal rink attraction.

The Ice Factory opened formally to the public on Friday, Nov. 15, after a number of outstanding exhibitions by members of the Central Carolina Figure Skating Club at the soft opening the prior evening. The rink is located at the American Tobacco Complex (ATC) in Durham. The ATC was developed and is owned by Capitol Broadcasting Company, and is the largest historic renovation project in state history with over 1 million square feet. It is a dynamic lifestyle development in the heart of Downtown Durham that includes offices, residences, restaurants and entertainment.

The ATC serves as a major destination and is a key catalyst in the resurgence of downtown Durham. The Ice Factory adds a new attraction to the ATC and complements the numerous holiday and Winter Wonders activities on the ATC campus. The Ice Factory is unique in that it stands inside an open air structure where a roof provides cover from rain and snow. While the skaters can have the frosty feel of winter they are not prevented from skating by inclement weather.
