2014 South Atlantic Regional Championships a big success

Congratulations to Jen Hoctor, competition chair and events coordinator, and her great operations team, including the Carolinas Figure Skating Club and the staff of Extreme Ice, for the outstanding job in hosting the South Atlantic Regional Figure Skating Championships. Over 350 competitors descended on Indian Trail, N.C., from Friday, Oct. 18 through Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, seeking to qualify for Eastern Sectional Figure Skating Championships, the final step to qualifying for the 2014 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Boston.

Two North Carolina skaters, Aaron Lenchek and Jessica Hu, qualified for Eastern Sectionals in intermediate men and championship ladies, respectively. Lenchek will also skate at sectionals in intermediate pairs with partner Jessica Tran. Sixteen-year-old Lenchek lives in Chapel Hill and competes for the Central Carolina Skating Club. He has been skating since the age of 8 and has trained under coaches Mary Jo Bullin, Lance Travis and Stephanie Kennedy. Hu, who will celebrate her 18th birthday tomorrow resides in Raleigh and competes for the Skating Club of North Carolina. Hu has trained under coaches Shirley Hughes, Barry Munns and Paul Wylie. We wish all three athletes the very best in their quest to compete at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

NC 2015 at 2013 Hilton HHonors Skate America

skate-americaThe U.S. captured more hardware than any other team during 2013 Hilton HHonors Skate America, Oct. 18-20, 2013, in Detroit. The premier international skating event held in the U.S this year, Skate America made its return to Detroit for the first time since 1998.

Team USA went home with a gold, two silver and two bronze medals. Ice dance World champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White succeeded in winning their fourth straight Skate America title with a dazzling performance.

Ashley Wagner, America's reigning U.S. champion, took home the silver medal, marking her seventh Grand Prix Series medal. Meanwhile, in the men's competition, Adam Rippon captured the silver medal while Max Aaron followed closely behind in third.

Representing North Carolina 2015, host of the 2015 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Greensboro, was Kim Strable, executive director of the Greensboro Sports Commission, and a member of the leadership team for the NC 2015 Local Organizing Committee. Strable reported that spending time on the concourse promoting the Tar Heel state, his home town of Greensboro and, of course, ticket sales for the 2015 U.S. Championships was a true labor of love - made that much more enjoyable he said, "by the passionate and enthusiastic fans of the sport."
