U.S. Figure Skating Sets Road to Greensboro

locationsEarlier this month, U.S. Figure Skating released the names of the cities that will serve as hosts of the regional and sectional championships that lead to the 2015 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Greensboro. Host communities for regionals include Wenatchee, WA; St. Paul, MN; Alpharetta, GA; Ontario, CA; Traverse City, MI; Burlington, VT; Salt Lake City; and Fort Collins, CO. Host communities for sectionals are Raleigh, NC; Geneva, IL; and Spokane, WA.

"For us, this is the equivalent of the release of the Final Four Brackets in NCAA Basketball," said Hill Carrow, chairman of North Carolina 2015, host of the 2015 U.S. Championships. "It is exciting to see how athletes from across the country, and host cities around the U.S., all have one common goal in mind: making it to Greensboro, North Carolina, for the U.S. Championships."

U.S. Figure Skating estimates that approximately 350 skaters compete in each regional, so that means that there are roughly 3,150 athletes who start out on the road to Greensboro. By the time the field has been pared down through sectionals, approximately 350 will then compete in Greensboro.

"When you figure that only a little over ten percent of the athletes who begin the 'playoffs' make the final competition, that just illustrates how Greensboro will be hosting the best of the best." said Paul Wylie, Olympic silver medalist and honorary chairman of the 2015 U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

North Carolina's Triangle Area to Host Sectionals

triangleThe Factory Ice House in Wake Forest, NC, has been selected by U.S. Figure Skating to host the Eastern Sectional Championships for the 2015 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. The dates of the competition are Nov. 19-23, 2014.

Scott Cudmore, figure skating director for Polar Ice, which manages The Factory Ice House, who also serves as president of the Triangle Figure Skating Club said, "This is the most exciting announcement in the history of our club. First of all, it's the biggest and most prestigious figure skating event that Triangle Figure Skating Club has ever hosted. Second, the timing is so great, with Easterns serving as the last major qualifying event for the 2015 U.S. Championships, which will be an hour drive away in Greensboro."

Triangle Figure Skating Club is expecting 350 competitors for Eastern Sectional Championships, and they look forward as Cudmore says to "training some good volunteers who can be a valuable part of the U.S. Championships volunteer team."
