Sochi Shines Bright Light on Figure Skating

The sport of figure skating had the featured position in the NBC coverage from the 22
nd Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. With the addition of the first-ever Olympic figure skating team event , figure skating coverage filled 11 nights of NBC's primetime coverage. Without counting the internet streaming broadcast, NBC's Sochi Games cable and network coverage provided an unprecedented platform for the sport and extensive international exposure for U.S Olympic Figure Skating Team members.

sochi The highlight of the Games came when Meryl Davis and Charlie White won the country's first gold medal in ice dance. Paul Wylie handles multiple roles at the Olympic Games

paul-in-sochiPaul Wylie, honorary chairman of the 2015 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, was in Sochi for the Games and stayed busy throughout. In addition to providing figure skating commentary for Westwood One Radio Networks, Wylie gave interviews back home in North Carolina with NBC affiliate stations in Charlotte, Winston-Salem and Raleigh.

"The Games were great!" he said. "Thanks to the weather I was able to spend much of the time in short sleeves! The venues were outstanding and so convenient with the location in Olympic Park. I could walk everywhere I needed to go."

Wylie added, "I was very impressed with the figure skating in Sochi and thrilled with Meryl and Charlie's victory. I am excited about hosting so many of our U.S. team members in Greensboro next year."

Civic Club Circuit Gets Underway

civic-club-circuit With a very appropriate start in the midst of the Olympic Games period, leaders of North Carolina 2015, local organizing committee for the 2015 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, hit the road to build more awareness of, and enthusiasm for, the 2015 U.S. Championships.

The first week of presentations included those at Kernersville Rotary, Greensboro Rotary and the High Point Rotary Club. The excitement generated by the figure skating at the Sochi Games was evident as each club had strong attendance and a number of questions about America's skaters at the Games.

"These types of presentations are very important to the success of the 2015 U.S. Championships," Hill Carrow, Chairman, said . "Rotary and other civic clubs are comprised of active community leaders whose understanding and support of the Championships is essential. Consider, for example, that Greensboro Rotary is the largest Rotary club in the Carolinas. They meet weekly at the venue for the Championships, the Greensboro Coliseum Complex. Many get their businesses involved as sponsors or ticket buyers for the Championships, or serve as volunteers. Without that kind of involvement, we could not deliver the highest-level Championships we are planning for U.S. Figure Skating and our country's top athletes."
